Week 4

Knowledge Gained Reflect on what you have learned about colour theory and how different colour combinations enhance design. Consider how research has influenced your approach to colour in design. I've learnt that when I view an image like a photograph, for example, its colour scheme can contain complex variety in hue, saturation, brightness, tint, and shade, that there’s a science (or theory) behind colour, that colour schemes don’t just 'work' (or not) for no reason, but the success in their combinations is likely due to their relative positions on the colour wheel and what scheme type (monochromatic, triadic etc.) they follow. I also learnt that colour is incredibly emotive and can quite powerfully change your mood.  Challenges Identify any difficulties you encountered while engaging with the module content and finalising Assessment 2. I had some difficulty in replicating colours from photos/images I found online. I used various forms of media (e.g...

Week 3

Knowledge Gained I suppose my biggest take away this week from learning about the design elements and principles has been that successful design is somewhat formulaic, that there is a design justification for why the eye is pleased (or not). I think the expression that Billy Blue has adopted – learn the rules so you can break them – will become a guiding force for me during my studies. Hopefully I can apply design principles as trusty formulas while also seeking ways to break free from them. Challenges Some conceptual challenges I had this week were understanding value versus colour, understanding shape versus form, and understanding how to distinguish between line and shape in ambiguous contexts. Some practical challenges I experienced – applying pigment liner to paper using a cross hatching technique and subsequently making a drawing too dark and imbalanced in one section, and learning how to correctly reference obscure images from the internet. Successes & S...

Week 2

I found this week introspective and insightful. It's reminded me of how important it is to revisit my internal landscape every once in a while, to reflect on traits I'd forgotten to look at, to celebrate what I've got, and to notice where I can put in some work. Creative Types Test Reflect on your dominant creative type and how the skills and characteristics of your creative type will help you excel in your chosen design field. My dominant creative type is The Alchemist, I more or less agree with the type breakdown. Creative type aside, the description speaks more broadly to my general personality; ‘Your life is an endless quest for meaning and a journey of self-exploration’ ‘[You] seek to understand the inner workings of all things’ ‘Having touched your own depths, you understand that even darkness has its purpose’ In terms of how this way of thinking – of having a strong focus on examination and inquiry – will benefit me in interior design, I think the ability...

Week 1

Hi Hannah,  I hope to make this visually appealing in the coming weeks. But, for now.. Knowledge gained: What did I learn this week, academically and personally? It has been a long time since I have studied outside of the context of work. Of course, I’ve learnt new skills and gained knowledge in the workforce, but that has always been under the motivating forces of Getting Paid and of Avoiding Getting Fired. Learning proactively, under my own steam, and because it is something I want to do, feels like returning to a long-lost version of myself. I was interested to hear what you had to say on resilience and the academic slump. I have consistently experienced this throughout my life and have never thought it was a common feature of the process but rather my own personal glitch. Challenges: What obstacles did I face, and how did I overcome them? I managed the 2.5 hour commute on Monday morning pretty well but I left 6 minutes too late on Tuesday and disc...
