Week 4

Knowledge Gained

Reflect on what you have learned about colour theory and how different colour combinations enhance design. Consider how research has influenced your approach to colour in design.

I've learnt that when I view an image like a photograph, for example, its colour scheme can contain complex variety in hue, saturation, brightness, tint, and shade, that there’s a science (or theory) behind colour, that colour schemes don’t just 'work' (or not) for no reason, but the success in their combinations is likely due to their relative positions on the colour wheel and what scheme type (monochromatic, triadic etc.) they follow.

I also learnt that colour is incredibly emotive and can quite powerfully change your mood.

Challenges

Identify any difficulties you encountered while engaging with the module content and finalising Assessment 2.

I had some difficulty in replicating colours from photos/images I found online. I used various forms of media (e.g. markers, watercolours), eventually landing on acrylic paint because of its’ forgiving nature, and ‘layer-ability’.

Successes & Strengths

Acknowledge your achievements as you work on completing Assessment 1. What skills or strategies do you feel confident about? Reflect on instances where you applied your knowledge successfully in the last 2–4 weeks.

I gave myself a good amount of time to complete Assessment 1 and I didn’t feel particularly rushed submitting it – this is a good indicator for me and it tells me I didn’t spend too much time in the land of procrastination for this assessment.

I also feel more confident about entering into ‘study mode’ or ‘flow state’ particularly while having to do creative experimentation – putting tunes on and honing in is something I haven’t done in a long time, and it feels quite therapeutic.

Application

Discuss how you plan to apply what you learnt in Assessment 1 to your current or future learning.

I learnt that I struggle somewhat with procrastination and time management. After completing Assessment 1, I am already better at managing my time – I’ve been putting together daily study schedules, and blocking out chunks of time for study, life admin, and socialising.

Areas for Improvement

Reflect on areas where you feel you could improve or need further practice.

I plan to get even better at managing my time and dealing with my perfectionism, I’ve noticed I can spend too much (likely un-productive) time on assessments and the work-life balance pendulum swings in the opposite direction (yesterday I emerged from my study, vitamin D deficient and bug-eyed after 8 hours at my desk!)

Goals

Based on your reflections, what study goals can you set for the coming week?

I'd like to set myself the goal of updating my study schedule to be not only time focussed but goal focussed - can I achieve certain assessment/project milestones by certain times in the study day/week? I think this will help with my issue of over-working an assessment.

Comments

  1. Hi Susan,

I really enjoyed reading about your journey with Assessment 1. It’s fantastic to hear that you gave yourself enough time to complete the task without feeling rushed. That’s such a positive indicator of growth and shows you’re starting to find a balance between productivity and procrastination.

Your insights into time management and perfectionism are spot on and it’s so encouraging to see that you’re already making meaningful changes like using daily study schedules and planning ahead. Shifting your schedule to focus on goals rather than just time blocks is a fantastic idea. Keep experimenting with what works for you, and be kind to yourself along the way :)
