Week 7
Knowledge Gained
Reflect on what you learned about the feedback process. How did receiving feedback from your peers influence your design? How did providing feedback to others deepen your understanding of your work?
The feedback I received was fundamental to steering the course of my work in an improved direction. It enabled me to see my work from differing angles, I had become so deeply invested in it that I wasn't quite seeing where it didn't work, listening to the feedback and taking a step back led me to seeing my work more holistically and producing more cohesive results.
In asking myself whether my peer's work was clear, cohesive, aesthetically appealing, and whether it addressed the brief, I was able to use the same reflective thinking on my own work.
Challenges
Was receiving or giving feedback during this activity complex? How did you manage any discomfort or challenges related to constructive criticism? What strategies did you use to ensure feedback was both effective and productive?
Giving feedback to my peers in class was quite difficult particularly as I do not know them super well. I found myself focussing on giving praise and skirting around the 'constructive feedback bit'. To manage this, I made sure to preface and append all constructive feedback with a comment about what I liked about the work.
Success & Strengths
Reflect on your achievements in giving and receiving feedback. What feedback did you receive that was particularly valuable or helped you improve your work? What aspects of your design were reinforced by the feedback, and how did this boost your confidence in your design process?
Feedback that was particularly valuable was that my existing work for my principles cube was not visually consistent, nor did it completely match my mood board. This was difficult to hear initially as I had put some thought into my design solutions but, after a breather, I could see that not only was it correct, but I already knew it deep down.
Conversely, when being told that my work looked good or made sense, I felt as if I was on the right path and I noticed that my momentum picked up.
Application
Consider how the feedback you received and gave can apply to your future work. How will the feedback process influence your approach to future design challenges? How do you plan to incorporate feedback into future projects to improve design outcomes?
I will aim to seek out feedback as early as possible during each phase of a project - so that I can make changes before committing too deeply to a design solution.
Areas for Improvement
Reflect on areas where you could improve in the feedback process. Were there any points where you struggled to take or give constructive feedback effectively? Are there any skills or strategies you would like to develop to make the feedback process smoother in future activities?
I could aim to become better at providing constructive feedback without worrying so much about how it will effect the recipient. I suppose this means I could learn and develop skills in diplomacy, and perhaps also in sales or negotiation.
Goals
Based on your reflections, what study or personal development goals can you set for the upcoming week?
To seek and incorporate feedback into the other projects I have going on at the moment.
Hi Susan,
ReplyDeleteThanks for sharing! It was wonderful to see you have taken the time to engage with both the emotional and practical aspects of giving and receiving feedback, which is an essential part of your development as a designer.
I also loved your point about how giving feedback helped you take a step back and see your own work more holistically. It’s so easy to get caught up in our own ideas that we stop seeing the full picture, and it sounds like you’ve really embraced that shift in perspective.
I’m excited to see how you carry this mindset into future projects. Keep practicing both giving and receiving feedback. I promise it gets easier!
